Tips for Student Success

Here are some of our department’s recommended tips for student success. If you have questions or wish to discuss these further, please contact your Student Success Advisor.

Student Success should be one of your first stops as you navigate Oglethorpe University. We want to get to know you! Whenever you have any questions or concerns, let us know. We are happy to help or point you in the right direction!

Office hours are times that faculty set aside for you to ask questions and connect! Faculty are eager to speak with you and help you learn more about the course material. Make sure to ask any questions you need to succeed!

Don’t wait until you are struggling in class. Make sure to book an appointment for tutoring support. Also, make sure to ask your professor who is your supplemental instructor (SI) for your course, if applicable. Typically, SIs are available for some STEM, social science, and business courses. Visit the Academic Support webpages for more information.

Make sure to structure a study schedule and plan intentional breaks. It is recommended to dedicate twice the number of hours to study per credit hour of instruction. For example, if you are enrolled in 16 hours of courses, you will need to dedicate 32 hours of study throughout your schedule. If you are planning to work, please ensure you do not exceed 20 hours a week. Should you need help managing your time during the school year, visit your Student Success Advisor.

It is important that you involve yourself in activities and groups that provide you with a sense of belonging and connection to the people around you. Join a club, organization, or start one up. OUConnect is a great resource to explore extracurricular opportunities. You can follow departments and clubs on social media. Finally, make sure to follow Student Success on Instagram @oglestudentsuccess.

Maintaining good hygienic practices like showering, brushing your teeth and sleeping regularly is an essential part of intentional self-care. Additional wellness practices include drinking enough water daily, eating nutritious meals that promote your health, and speaking to someone to support your mental health needs. When you are managing your time, remember to include leisurely activities that connect you to interests beyond your academics.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help while on your journey at OU. The most successful students ask the most questions! Students have a variety of free resources available and plenty of people who are willing and able to assist. You are not alone. Please reach out and let us know how we can partner with you to achieve your goals.
